You may have heard about a ductless HVAC system, but do you know why it may be a good option for your home or business? While a ductless HVAC can serve as a replacement new HVAC system, it can also be used in addition to the standard whole house system.
What Is a Ductless HVAC System?
A ductless system has multiple indoor units that are used in each room as needed. They work with a single outdoor unit to function as both a heater and air conditioner. They require only a small hole in the wall and allow for individual heating and cooling in each room.
The obvious benefit of a ductless system is in how they save energy. Most homeowners may not realize this, but a good portion of heated or cooled air is actually absorbed by the ductwork. By directly releasing the air from the unit into the room, all the energy used to for heating or cooling is being used for the comfort of the people inside.
It also saves energy by heating and cooling according to room needs. A kitchen may not need to be heated while cooking in the winter, or may need extra cooling in the summer, without cooling the rest of the house. Likewise, a room not currently being used may not need more than a minimum level of HVAC control. That could include a bedroom during the day, an exercise room other than during a workout session, or a hobby room only used on weekends. It saves energy to refrain from running heat and air conditioning in those rooms along with the rest of the house.
Differences from a Traditional System
It is worth noting that a ductless system is more expensive than a traditional heat pump. Fortunately, there are ways to calculate how long it will take for the energy savings to offset the initial costs. Such evaluation depends on the area’s climate, needs of people who use the building, and layout of the setting. It’s also worth noting ductless systems generally require less maintenance, although filter changes on schedule are far more important than with traditional systems.
